The Man Who Knew Too Much plot

"A little knowledge can be a deadly thing!"

A typical, somewhat naive American family is on holiday in Morocco with their ten-year-old son Hank. They accidentally become involved in an international conspiracy. Their son is then kidnapped to silence them. Hank's kidnapping suddenly entangles them in a net of intrigue and murder. This version is a 'remake' of Hitchcock's own film from 1934.

"You English intellectuals will be the death of us all."

One of Hitchcock's best movies. The Man Who Knew Too Much is a colorful, exciting and humorous spy thriller the way only Hitchcock can make. That the man has never made a James bond film remains astonishing, because with this film he shows once again how good he is at making these kinds of spy films.

The first part in Morocco provides a calm and atmospheric build-up to the story, and the interplay between Stewart and Doris Day is very entertaining to watch. The acting of Miles, De Banzie and Nalder as the bad guys should not be left unmentioned either. Tension is ramped up in the second part in London, and the church scene and the scenes during a concert at the Albert Hall theater are not only highlights of the film, but also highlights of Hitchcock's entire oeuvre.

Good hitch. Takes some time to get going and set up the set, but once that's done, a thrilling conspiracy thriller awaits the audience in the second hour with a delightful climax in the Albert Hall. James Stewart was clearly a favorite actor of Hitchcock's; how many times has that man not acted in his movies? But the real surprise for me was Doris Day. Usually wives are mandatory additions in those old movies, but here she takes a full part in the story.

With this film, Hitchcock once again shows that he is the master of suspense. The story itself isn't bad, but in the hands of Hitchcock it becomes a strong thriller. For a change it revolves around a family instead of a love story. In terms of story I will not reveal anything here, for that you have to see the film.

In the beginning, we as viewers are dragged into characters that would look suspicious. Even if you don't know if that's the case, or what's going on. Gradually, the time pressure plays a role, it has become a real thriller. The highlight is the scene in Albert Hall with only the music and no dialogue. Beautiful!

Hitchcock can hold the tension so that it becomes an exciting film. Visually it is not always what you would expect from him, although there are plenty of good camera shots. Stewart has done better, but remains a craftsman. Always a pleasure to watch him at work. And especially Doris Day is pretty good here.
