"Too CLEVER to be STRAIGHT"
William Foster is a slick lawyer. His specialty is defending crooks and related shadowy figures. He also successfully challenges the sentences of already convicted criminals, so that they return to society prematurely. He has an affair with Irene Manners, who cheats on him. She kills a man and makes her other free-range Jack run for it. William is assigned the case.
