Tina, a barmaid in the tavern The Red Mill in a Dutch village, is exploited by Willem, her employer. Her only friend is Ignatz, a mouse who lives in a clog. When tough Dennis Wheat comes to visit, Tina falls in love with him. Meanwhile, Tina's friend Gretchen, the mayor's daughter, threatens to be married off to an elderly governor, while Gretchen actually wants to marry Jacop van Goop, a handsome but humble army captain.
