A little special film, which never really gets funny.

In-laws are a sensitive subject for some people. Very often there seems to be something wrong with these strange people, who often fail to understand you. That is why many films are made about it. Meet the Parents is in my opinion the best in this area.

The In-Laws clearly doesn't come close to this. The film is a remake of the 1979 film, which I am not familiar with. The story isn't that great, but the acting itself is pretty good. The film races like crazy through all predictable situations, but the big flaw of the film is that it clearly doesn't want to be really funny. Other than that I don't have much to say about it.

Fairly entertaining comedy that relies on the interaction between Douglas and Brooks. The interactions between the two gentlemen yield a few hilarious fragments and a few very witty dialogues. Good for a few laughs and a good mood.

Brooks plays the typical bourgeois man with a Jewish background. He does that well. The subtler comedy comes from his neurotic character. Douglas is more for the bloated action humor. Although I prefer the subtler form of humor, the combination works fine.

Towards the end the high entertainment content suddenly dries up and the film loses its comic track. When the storylines come together, it is accompanied by unpleasant feel-good and a lot of physical fanfare. The funny events and fun situations seem quite forced from that moment on. The last half hour of the film is no more than an average action comedy with a lot of hectic and noise. Any kind of subtlety is gone for good. The humor too.

Fortunately, the first hour of the film is very enjoyable.

“This wedding is going to be as normal as butter on mashed potatoes.”

Douglas once again steals the show. He manages to save The In-Laws on his own (along with Ryan Reynolds), because the rest of the film is very mediocre and not really funny. Brooks is nice in the beginning, but he actually gets more annoying. Reynolds should have had a bigger role (father/son action comedy with Douglas?), because his dry-comedy remarks and the relationship with his father provide some nice moments.
