I always had the impression that The Circus was seen as the least Tramp film, but to my surprise the film turns out to be genuinely more fun than The Gold Rush and especially the heavily overrated The Kid, even if the level of Modern Times and the masterpiece City Lights is higher. not reached.

I especially noticed that the pace here seems to be higher than ever and the different jokes follow each other faster. There are some nice running gags in there, like the donkey that attacks every time. The palace of mirrors is also beautiful. But the comic highlight is clearly the brilliant tightrope walking scene. Well, this in itself would have been a smashing finale, but Chaplin manages to give the film an emotional power at the end that is almost equal to that of Modern Times (but not City Lights). Perfect!

Little to note. Definitely belongs to the better Chaplin work. 4 big stars!

Very nice stupid comedy again from Charlie Chaplin. Given the location, many jokes and pranks are predictable, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun to watch. A circus lends itself perfectly to enjoying yourself completely. Everything is reviewed with wild animals, clowns, the hall of mirrors and the better height work. Great scene on the high rope by the way.

The more serious and even sad note this time comes from the hard-hearted circus director. And Charlie himself also has a hard time when a competitor shows up. In that respect, admittedly a bit simple, but ultimately heart-warming, as befits the good loubas. Drama and humor go hand in hand here. Nice!

This is a Charlie Chaplin movie as we know Charlie Chaplin best: consistently brilliant slapstick but also with drama and even romance so that it is humor with a warm heart. The idea is simple: Chaplin paradoxically becomes the star of the show, precisely because with him everything goes wrong where success eliminates success. However, the film also has an inverted meta-paradox as a result: Chaplin was the greatest clown of his time – in this film he plays his own success, as it were – in which his comic clumsiness was of course practiced down to the finest detail, so not authentic. used to be. And Charlie Chaplin was an unparalleled natural at making every scene hilarious with his acting, proving once again what comic genius he is with this film.
