Romantic comedy has been reinvented so many times over the movie years that you have every reason to think it's nearly impossible to reinvent the genre. "The Big Sick" now joins the list of "It Happened One Night", "Annie Hall", "When Harry Met Sally" and "Four Wedding & A Funeral". Why? The autobiographical screenplay by Emily Gordon (here played by Zoe Kazan) and Kumail Nanjiani (playing herself) evades all clichés, is therefore constantly unpredictable, yet manages to feel realistic. And while you might think that the story of two young people falling in love but unable to see a common future due to cultural differences, until one of them is hospitalized with a serious illness immediately brings back memories of the cradle of modern romanticism. cliches: "Love Story" [1970]. So there are many pitfalls and for the seasoned film viewer also a lot of moments when you think you know in which direction the film is going. "The Big Sick" surprises again and again, with the characterizations and portrayals of the unsurpassed Holly Hunter and Ray Romano (as Zoe's parents) being of great value. Be surprised by this refreshing, delicious masterpiece.

Decent romcom in a setting of hospitals and a girlfriend who ended up in a coma. Not an everyday plot, so this one is definitely refreshing. Nice to see the side plot as a stand up comedian. It certainly passed and it was quite funny that Kumail wasn't funny at all. His jokes during conversations were also filled with (smiles) laughter because the context was always so wrong.

However, the romantic part was too poor. Little convincing and certainly no real connection between Kumail and Emily. The love, the relationship, the arguing ... didn't seem natural or spontaneous. The arranged marriage in Pakistan was quite interesting and too little was done about this in the movie regarding Emily (and her family). Ray Romano, who played father Terry, I thought was more than decent. Quite interesting and funny character.

By using different genres together, I wasn't sure where the film was going. A bit of this and a bit of that without being really convincing. But it was pleasant. You have to take the typical feel good ending for granted.

Nice.

I like it, comedy actors who take on a drama film. Then you often see a layer that shows that they can do more than just make silly jokes and really deserve the stage they can be on. In this case it's Nanjiani's turn.

I've known the movie for a while but never put it on. The running time was quite intimidating, 2 hours for a comedy film. Now I didn't immediately expect that it would actually be more of a drama film with some bland humor in between and some romance in the first half of the film.

Nanjiani is doing very well. I'm a little less a fan of his humor, but luckily Burnham is next to him who then manages to fulfill that part. Kazan also plays very strong, I hadn't seen her that often in movies but with this role she proves that she is more than worth seeing more of.

The story is otherwise fairly standard and at times predictable, but it is still nicely developed. The combination between comedy and drama is fairly restless, sometimes comedy is very much discussed and at other times drama. That continues to vary strongly, but the feel is more than sufficient for both genres.

Emotion is often palpable and the film feels humane. This ensures that the 119 minutes are not a difficult task and that the minutes are indeed completed. It has some strong moments, and sometimes it is interrupted by forced comedy. In general it is a good result with sufficient humanity and emotion. I quite enjoyed it. I don't really have much more to say about it.
