A pathetic, self-proclaimed "unromantic comedy" in which the infantile Carey [Kyle Marvin] literally goes to Paul [Michael Angelo Covino] and Julie [Dakota Johnson] because Ashley [Adria Arjona] announces her intention to divorce him. Paul and Julie have an open relationship and might offer him advice. Ashley joins the conversation, and the intended humorous situations unfold in a screwball comedy full of self-absorbed, annoying characters and jokes that repeatedly fail. Astonishingly bad!

A pretty good movie. A bit messy at times, but the cast plays well, and there are a few scenes that made me laugh. I liked the humor of the film.

Splitsville started off very funny and absurd—that whole opening scene in the car says it all about the humor of directing duo Kyle Marvin and Michael Angelo Covino—and maintains a nice edge and wit throughout the first half. The situations constantly waver between completely absurd and over the top (the long fight between Carey and Paul, where they tear down the whole house, or those scenes with all of Ashley's flings "befriending" Carey and hanging around the house.). It's during these scenes that the film truly comes alive and finds its own character. The second half has much less of this, eventually descending into a more standard (anti-)rom-com, which ends where it began—with both couples back together. What the film is trying to say? I honestly have no idea, I don't think it's very much. It didn't feel all that thought-out.

Fortunately, all four main actors do a very good job, which makes the various situations and relationships very entertaining to watch. I'm seeing Dakota Johnson for the second time in a short time (a few months ago in Celine Song's Materialists), and she's convincing once again, but it's Kyle Marvin, as the good-natured lout Carey, who I enjoyed most.

A solid 3*, with a much better first half than the second.
