Great entertainment with this fairly short full feature from Buster Keaton. The first part of the film focuses, as usual, on comic situations, after which, to the delight of the viewer, the acrobatic physical comedy takes over in the finale, in which Keaton is such a topper. Not just your average movie, though, because this Sherlock Jr. contains really fresh ideas such as the beautiful dream sequence where the lines blur between Keaton's reality and the film set in the cinema where he works/falls asleep. Very nice sequence of various scenes here. And what about the final sequence in which the awake Keaton is with his lover in a frame (the viewer sees them through the window of the projection booth) parallel to the frame of the screen in the room where Keaton's example is playing. Beautiful.

The final chase is another highlight of creativity. When you then read that the breakneck feats actually led to serious injuries, but that Keaton continued with the film thanks to his high pain tolerance ... then you realize what a unique, passionate and talented performers did their thing in the early days of the film . Don't try this at home, this is definitely the place to be.

Good.

Slightly less than The General, this previously made Sherlock Jr. Here we see Buster Keaton falling more into typical slapstick and less into stunts. Certainly in the first fifteen minutes they take the time to tell the story (of something and nothing), afterwards they can pick up a little more pace and Keaton once again comes up with some iconic stunts.

It's really wonderful to see how creative people were in those days. That applies not only to the stunts, but also, for example, to that scene in the cinema. In my opinion, this was done magnificently: very simple, but the elaboration was done quickly and precisely. With a playing time of just under three quarters of an hour, this one is over before you even realize it.

Second Keaton.

I didn't like it as much as The General, but I think I can appreciate Keaton as a well-known director of some classic titles, against all expectations. In a time where I increasingly tear down classics because they genuinely don't bother me, it's always nice to come across some well-known titles that rise above the average for you.

At least Keaton is doing well here. Compared to The General, I find him a bit more childish. Plays with a little more puppetry emotion, although that might just be the recent take on his film. Well he does. He isn't very funny as far as I'm concerned, but he does pull out some smiles, and for me that's the minimum that comedy films should get from their viewers.

The stunts again impress, although they are less impressive than in, for example, The General. This film is much more intimate, and only really takes off towards the end. Sometimes well recorded, although as a whole it did not affect me as much. After 10 minutes I had already seen it because Keaton who plays detective cannot stand himself for a playing time of only 45 minutes.

All in all, it is a reasonable road-going film that is nice and short, but still feels just a bit too long. The story leads you to believe that there are still some nice twists involved, but Sherlock Jr. is a top and top comedy film and not much more than that. It lacks those really cool stunts, but has enough light-hearted jokes not to fall completely into dullness.
