Potiche plot

"France, 1977: Women's Liberation is in the air"

1977, Suzanne Pujol lives in the bourgeois town of Sainte-Gudule in the north of France. She is the devoted and homely wife of wealthy industrialist Robert Pujol. He runs his umbrella factory with an iron hand. The gruff boss tyrannizes his workers and runs the same reign of terror at home. When the workers go on strike for better working conditions, Robert has a heart attack and has to take a rest, all hell breaks loose. Suzanne is forced to take over her husband's job with the help of her former sweetheart and current union leader Maurice (Gérard Depardieu). To everyone's surprise, Suzanne turns out to be a skilled businesswoman who knows how to get things done. But when Robert returns from vacation fully rested, things get complicated.

The most famous of Ozon is a light-hearted back to the 70s. The wife of a tyrannical local industrialist is tired of her meaningless housewife life. When her hated husband Robert suffers a heart attack during an angry union demonstration, she takes over the reins of the company, looks back on a past full of amorous affairs and she stands for election in the municipal elections. . The 70s were indeed a time of struggle, both for the woman to claim her place in society and for the worker to be more than a workhorse, and that is evident in the film. Only I don't think Luchini is such a nice actor. Deneuve, Viard and Depardieu, on the other hand, were hard to imagine. Not a bad film, but a slightly lesser film by Ozon for me. Drama suits him better than comedy.

Deneuve stars as the ideal housewife (and grandmother) who discovers through a twist of fate that she has leadership talents. It is 1977 and the way in which she steps out of her traditional female role is not always well received, especially by men. Colorful, smooth comedy manages to score satirical points without ever getting heavy handed. Ozon amusingly plays with color and has assembled a fine supporting cast, including the ever-trustworthy Depardieu, but this is a fine showcase for one of the most acclaimed French actresses of all time.

I quietly dozed off at the sleep-inducing Potiche - in which Ozon films the 1970s as a transvestite cabaret - until I suddenly recognized the oval, golden-yellow windows of the CBR building in Brussels. A building that I know like the back of my hand. Asjemenou, from now on I can just say that I was already in the same room as gods Depardieu and Luchini .
