Mother's Day

Usually I can still appreciate movies like Mother's Day. Of course, it is all very predictable and the characters are very thinly developed, but it is usually extremely feel good. Unfortunately, this film makes it a bit too tight with a messy story, too many characters and too many storylines, none of which stick with me.

If you want to copy Love Actually if necessary, at least provide a good script, a pleasant atmosphere (Mother's Day is not Christmas, it turns out) and strong actors. Only Sudeikis caught my eye (okay, Mitchell in a bikini also stuck with me) and in a movie with Aniston, Hudson, Roberts, Olyphant etc. that's a bit sparse. No, please leave these kinds of films to the British.

Marshall is past the shame, but should he confirm that again with such an extremely bland formulaic film? Valentine's Day and New Years Eve were already hard to please, but with this Mother's Day this old routine is going down for good. A feel-good movie that actually leaves you completely indifferent. In the end I was able to laugh three more times, but if you consider that every five minutes they try to hit you right in the heart, that is questionably little.

The cast doesn't cooperate either: Marshall's favorites Roberts and Elizondo are of course present again, but here they give playing on autopilot a deeper meaning. Aniston has the main female role, but with this lady you wonder why she keeps popping up in comedies, because she is the world champion of grumpy looking. With her you can hardly smile at all, so you never get any sympathy for her characters. And Sudeikis does his best, but the director really should have invited Richard Gere one more time for this role.

Not exactly a Mother's Day to never forget. Non-binding tip: just celebrate this beautiful party in your own circle, and ignore this failure radically. This is the only way to prevent Columbus Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriot's Day, Thanksgiving Day, President's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial's Day, Halloween and Father's Day from being given an undesirable romantic look by uninspired American filmmakers.

Egh.

Apparently a niche that I have not noticed for a long time, I also have the feeling that I will not delve into it too much. This kind of woolly ensemble films are not exactly my cup of tea. They may be under comedy because of their lightness, I think they are serious dramas.

A lot of familiar faces are brought out again, all connected (Tarantino must be oh so proud) but otherwise have to tell as different stories as possible. The real red thread is Mother's Day, insofar as that matters in these kinds of films.

The humor is extremely mature, but the drama is also straight out of station novels. Dad who has to buy tampons for his daughter, then the woman at the checkout has to shout all over the store for the price, daughters who find their long-lost career mothers, mom who visits and is surprised by a number of things that surprise her. daughters did not dare to tell ... but don't worry, everything will be great again in the end!

No, this was so old-fashioned and dusty that I could barely look at it. The humor just isn't funny, the characters aren't charming, and the drama is tired. Bah.

0.5*
