Mio Fratello È Figlio Unico plot

"Sometimes the things we fight about are what brings us closest together"

Latina, a town founded by Mussolini's fascists just outside Rome in the 1960s. Growing up in a poor family, the young Accio quickly develops fascist sympathies, if only because he often encounters them in his environment. His older brother Manrico is on the one hand his great hero and example, but on the other hand he is a 'depraved' communist, just like his girlfriend who has a special place in Accios' heart. Nevertheless, the relationship between the brothers grows stronger as they grow up.

Mediocre. You can see that the writers of La Meglio Gioventù are behind this, and I also sometimes had to think of Novecento. But where both films take more than five hours, everything is now stopped in just under 100 minutes. This is a grandiose story about a longer period in which people try to create a kind of image of the time. And that's too much for that little playing time. One really has to go from scratch to tell everything. What remains is a chaotically told story that is fragmentary rather than a beautifully smoothly running whole. This means that as a viewer you do not empathize with anything and see this more as a summary than as a full story. A few small moments are still beautiful and it is not really boring, but there is also no point where it gets really interesting. Not even stylistically. The music is nice and that scene with music by Beethoven very beautiful, but also very solid and just plain boring filmed. 2.0*.

A piece in the life of an Italian family defined by fascist and communist contradictions.

Not really gripping to the heart or the throat but still quite subtly built up with some strong actors such as Elio Germano who perfectly portrays the idiosyncratic but impressionable and above all "difficult" character of the main character.
