Io Non Ho Paura plot

"Who can you trust when everyone's a suspect?"

We find ourselves in a small community surrounded by cornfields in the hot, dusty south of Italy in the summer of 1978. While the adults shelter inside from the scorching heat, six children venture outside on their bicycles through the desolate countryside. Hidden among the vast mass of corn, nine-year-old Michele discovers a secret so heavy and so terrible that he dares not tell anyone. To confront it, he must call on the power of his youthful imagination and the courage he doesn't know he has yet...

Nice film about (losing) the childish innocence , and about kidnappings, that just misses the dots. The attempt to make something great is clear, images, camera and acting are beautiful, and there are also a number of scenes in it that certainly do not leave you cold. But the reaction of the boy when he finds a boy chained up in a cave did not convince me. Such a child runs screaming and terrified to his parents to tell such a thing, and is not going to treat that captive child like a hamster, bring food and play with it. A child who does is ready for asylum. The film builds on this, to me, unrealistic reaction of that boy. The second downside as far as I'm concerned is that you can see the end coming for miles.

A very nice film and certainly worth watching, but it is not a masterpiece like Jeux Interdits (1952), Cría Cuervos (1976) or El Espíritu de la Colmena (1973). This film makes a worthy attempt but does not reach that level. Incidentally, these three films, especially the last one, have a pace that is at least as slow as this one. Not suitable for those who already found this film slow.

Despite the nice cinematography, this was not a high-flyer. The story shows quite quickly in its cards and therefore its inertia clearly plays tricks on the film. The offspring are also quite irritating and so is the family drama that imposes itself. And just when you think the misery is over, you also get a far too larmoyant ending.

Although it must be said: the camera work is often extremely precise and the soundtrack was also pleasant at times. Unfortunately, the film never manages to form a catchy whole. 2.0*.
