A typical Pierre Richard film with misunderstandings and crazy situations that make it funny, but unfortunately, as in many comedies, they exaggerate too much, lean towards the impossible and the whole thing ends up being a bit foolish.

I've always found Pierre Richard at his best alongside Gerard Depardieu, but actually, all his films are somewhat above average. This film is genuinely enjoyable, not meant to make you think, but simply to have a good laugh. So who cares if it's believable or a bit overdone? Like I said: just enjoy and laugh!

In The Parasol Coup, the character of Lecomte is mistaken for a real assassin. Pierre Richard plays Lecomte brilliantly. Lecomte is an arrogant, unemployed actor who only thinks of himself and his own gain. In a regular film, you wouldn't wish good things on such a character. In a madcap comedy starring Pierre Richard, it's different. His self-love and arrogance create countless comic and chaotic moments that make you forget what a nasty character Richard actually portrays.

Surrounding him is a helpful cast. The real hitman, of course. An unpleasant character with the typical cold demeanor you'd expect from a hitman. Humorless, and therefore perfectly suited as a sounding board for the humor Richard generates. There's also an Indian bodyguard (also humorless), and therefore also suitable, and some less essential characters who don't really matter but are somewhat important as part of the (humorous) events. The female cast is also nothing more than a framework. The center of attention is Pierre Richard.

The story is nonsensical, but it functions well as a framework for slapstick and visual humor. The film's central joke is that Lecomte is unaware he's been mistaken for a hitman and is oblivious to the severity of the violence taking place around him. This thread works perfectly until the very end. I certainly found the resulting frenzy and comedy quite funny.
