Much more enjoyable viewing experience than I had anticipated. I haven't seen many films with Belmondo in the lead role, but judging by this one, the man has a lot of charisma, he carries this film almost single-handedly. And that while the script is wafer-thin, the narrative structure has gaps, and the action is quite dated and cheap-looking by today's standards.

Switch your mind off and you'll have a pretty good movie. The beautiful music helps too of course (half a point extra for that), music that is actually worthy of an even better movie.

Can't be that complimentary about this either. I find Belmondo annoying in roles like this, where he struggles through the most difficult situations with a smile. That makes the film rather tensionless because as a viewer you know that he will never get into trouble. Here he plays a mercenary sacrificed by the secret services who returns to France to take revenge. Not much better than an average Chuck Norris or Charles Bronson film. The score by Ennio Morricone is well-known but fits a drama more than an action film. Actor Robert Hossein, who plays Belmondo's nemesis, strongly resembles Tommy Lee Jones... Filmkriebel says: fun for once.

A film with a high pulp content, but it works. Action is alternated with moments of cynicism and humor. Some scenes are loosely about it, such as the sexually tinged interrogation of Elisabeth Margoni by the police.
Belmondo is the ideal interpreter of the character, or rather this film project was created for him, and entertains the entire duration. Respect also for the great chase with the cars on the stairs, in which Belmondo himself holds his own.

Morricone's beautiful theme (recycling of work from a previous film) has something contemplative, seems to be at odds with the action/comedy, but also seems to deepen the film a bit. Beautiful. His music is also central to the shooting duel alluding to Leone, also beautiful how that little guy with the pink flowers passes by like an elephant in a china shop.
The music is important, but there are also enough moments where the cinema itself is central. The final scene is proof of that, with French grandeur.
