If Forman wanted to portray the drabness and joylessness of life in a society led by a communist system with this film, he succeeded well. Those scenes in the dance hall said it all. Poorly dressed and not cheerful looking ladies, clumsy-looking soldiers, a dance party that was all about soldier looking for a woman and where spontaneity was hard to find. So poverty is the trump card. No, the Prague Spring had clearly yet to begin.

So this film by Forman did not exactly make me enthusiastic. I'll soon try his last film from his Czech period Horí, Má Panenko (1967). That film appeals to me considerably more when I read the plot description.

Rating: just 3.0*

'Lásky jedné plavovlásky' is the wonderful breakthrough film by Milos Forman, who at that moment could not have imagined what fame still awaited him. Forman's craftsmanship is unmistakably present in this comedy. He lets the actors improvise and in scenes on a dance floor everyone goes their own way without knowing whether they are in the camera's view or not. The humor is mild, but amusing and you become slightly melancholy from the film, which apparently does an excellent job of portraying the atmosphere in which the Prague Spring of 1967 could arise.

Somewhere in a boring town in the Czech countryside, 18-year-old Andula works in a shoe factory. She is searching. To love, for example. She has a meaningless boyfriend. She flirts with a forest ranger who tells her about the mating instincts of animals. At a dance party she ends up among horny middle-aged reservists. She ends up in bed with a young pianist who compares her body to a guitar. Not an ordinary guitar but an angular guitar that could have been painted by Picasso. A compliment? Could be.

It is a hopeless existence. A hopeless existence. A joyless existence that is further accentuated by the harsh black and white of the images, which provide little reason for relief. It's a depressing setting. Using soulful observations from Andula's daily life, Milos Forman constructs a somewhat lethargic portrait of a volatile young woman with dreams and desires that can hardly develop in her unexciting environment.

And so the naive Andula, together with the viewer, encounters indifference, alienation and rejection in her search for a more exciting and richer life than the unsatisfactory routine that daily existence brings her. Andula maintains her illusions until the end. Good looking. I didn't believe in it anymore. It also made me a little tired.
