A young student is very dejected when he learns that his girlfriend is cheating on him with her ex-boyfriend. To find out why she does that, he decides to spy on her and the ex-boyfriend. Unnoticed, he follows them through the streets and parks of Paris.

Another irresistible film about unbearable people by Rohmer 
Anne, a completely fickle bimbo who thinks the world revolves around her (there are still many like her walking around today, the only difference is that they all have Snapchat now) and François, a hopeless slacker who does her bidding: two archetypes who apparently attract each other strongly in reality as well. Yet you never get the impression that Rohmer wants to mock his creation. Not only because he portrays the quirks of his characters with great subtlety (unlike an unnamed American director whose name starts with an L), just think of the final scene where Anne keeps nervously sitting on her bed, standing up again, picking up a book, starting to fiddle with something: enough to give you the creeps. But also because the milieu of the privileged, highly educated twenty-something who is the plaything of relational troubles is clearly a middle ground with which Rohmer felt a strong affinity and to which he belonged himself. That is why, in the end, despite all the annoyances, I feel a lot of sympathy for Anne and François and can recognize myself in many situations.

I quite enjoyed this Rohmer. As in just about all the films I’ve seen by him so far, it deals with characters who are at odds with themselves and their love lives.
This film takes a very intriguing turn when François starts spying on his girlfriend's ex and meets Lucie in the process. Anne-Laure Meury plays the role of Lucie in an incredibly charming and natural way. From the moment she and François connect, we get to see the best scenes of the film, taking place on the bus, in the park, and in the café. Not that Rohmer turned it into a thrilling spy story, but it did ensure that François and Lucie had enjoyable conversations.
When François returns to his girlfriend Anne's apartment, we see a very different dynamic. It is no longer the playful atmosphere like with Lucie; Anne is very fickle, and there are more frustrations between them. The contrast between the two ladies is therefore stark, and for François, an anticlimax follows when he tries to deliver a postcard to Lucie but accidentally catches her kissing one of François's colleagues.
Another fine Rohmer, whom I place neatly in the middle of the 7 films I have seen by him.
