Mediocre film in which a downtrodden bowler discovers a new talent. The story itself starts off well, but quickly loses its interest. Also, the movie goes on way too long. The bland humor is entertaining here and there and of the cast Bill Murray is certainly the best in a small role.

Kingpin, the film the Farrelly brothers made after their hit Dumb and Dumber, resembles its predecessor in many ways. A simple story with a road trip of two losers and a series of very nice scenes, mixed with the flat poo and pee humor. But one of the biggest changes is that this time they don't rely much on the crazy faces of the protagonists. From what I understand, Randy Quaid is a bigger idiot than all the Farrelly brothers put together, but here's where the humor comes in mainly because of his sincerity. Woody Harrelson is also comical because of his stoic attitude. Only Bill Murray has been hired to be an idiot, even though his haircut does most of the work.

Kingpin is ultimately a sympathetic comedy with a series of successful jokes, but it all takes too long. With 80 to a maximum of 90 minutes, a much tighter, nicer movie would have come out here, I'm guessing. Because every time the film gets a little more serious and quiet - especially around the story of Vanessa Angel, among others - things really seem to come to a standstill. Kingpin is especially strong in the smooth moments. The film certainly isn't as fun as the Farrelly brothers' directorial debut - nor as fun as the film they made after that - but if you look at their even later work, Kingpin isn't that bad after all.

3 stars.

I thought it was a fun movie. A kind of rise-and-fall story with both comedic and dramatic aspects. Woody Harrelson is a great choice for the role of Roy Munson. Can pass for all kinds of roles with his face. The other 2 lead roles are for the Amish Ishmael played by Randy Quaid. Like Vanessa Angel, I've never seen him act before. Bill Murray also has a nasty bit part that he actually plays with verve. You would beat him up like that haha, only he is in fact not even worth it.

The movie always made me laugh. It's not the funniest movie, but it's also a good road movie/adventure. So there is more than comedy in this film. Pretty underrated in my opinion.
