The scenes with Catherine and Nicholas looked reasonable but for the rest it was really a lousy image quality. Terrible, sometimes it looked like a random Funniest Home Video fragment (but then without humor). Apart from that we are dealing with an extremely uninteresting scenario and the whole film-in-film thing was very clumsy. Also, here and there annoying voice-overs are used that have no addition and what exactly the purpose of that beach ball was remained unclear to me. A complete failure.

I didn't think it was that bad at all.

Another smaller film from Soderbergh. Admittedly, if you are watching for the plot, you don't have much to look for in this film. The setup is rather open, with a lot of characters who are linked to each other and all spend one day.

Central to this are typical problems such as relationships, work ... a bit of the typical life problems. Not very exciting material, but Soderbergh gives it something extra. A few vague scenes (such as the interviews of Keener) and strange castings (Roberts) ensure that it never really gets boring.

Visually, I think this is one of Soderbergh's first DV projects. He certainly experiments quite a bit with his camera while the image quality is not exactly great. In any case, it sounds perfectly early DV. Yet it is not ugly either. Soderbergh uses the image quality to his advantage, although of course it never becomes really beautiful or spectacular.

A fresh and lively film. It's been too long to say for sure, but it feels like an extension of Sex, Lies & Videotapes. The point remains that Soderbergh is a fine director who rarely makes a mistake, no matter what guise he takes.

3.0*

Thanks for the happy ending.

That this film has something to do with Sex Lies and Videotape is probably something Soderbergh made up afterwards. In any case, I don't see any connection, not in terms of narrative, not in terms of visual style, and certainly not cinematically. It may be appreciated that he dares to throw this kind of experiment out into the world, on the other hand it doesn't really come across as if he put any effort into it. And the same goes for the entire cast and crew. Wasn't there anyone who could have said 'yes but sorry, where is this actually going?'

Nowhere. And besides that, one of the ugliest movies I've ever seen.
