A good film in which a wealthy woman and her son leave for Paris as soon as her money runs low. The film's progression is unpredictable (partly due to the slightly eccentric characters). Michelle Pfeiffer is well cast and also delivers a fine performance. Valerie Mahaffey is entertaining in a supporting role. It's a bit slow and could perhaps have been shorter, but 3.5 stars are definitely deserved.

I don't think Michelle Pfeiffer's career will benefit from getting involved in these kinds of empty dramedies. A caricatural film about eccentric characters. Not my cup of tea.

A simple premise in itself, but developed into such a homeopathic plot that it's impossible to make heads or tails of it. And that would be bearable if there were something to counter it. But alas, Pfeiffer plays her usual character far too much, with makeup and hair being incredibly cliché—I can't quite recall in which film, but there's a strong feeling I've seen that deja vu before.

And equally disappointing is the rest of the cast—I was drawn in by Poots's name, but with three minutes of screen time, it's a lot. The only one who manages to bring any intensity to the screen is Isaach de Bankolé, but even that's a very, very small supporting role.

The locations are also dull, bordering on deadly. Paris, the city of light, has never been so flat and gray. Was the money running out? Was that the reason? It could just as easily refer to the production. Hugely disappointing.
