Smooth action film with a big wink, energetically directed by the Russian Ilya Naishuller, who we still know from Hardcore Henry. Bob Odenkirk does well in a rather atypical role for him and the spectacular action scenes are artfully portrayed. Unfortunately, towards the end the tone becomes more and more faint and the film eventually loses some of its power, so that the promise of the first hour is not fully fulfilled. Nevertheless very entertaining and at times quite brutal.

As a big Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fan, I immediately noticed this film. Particularly the atypical role for Bob Odenkirk. An action movie? With him? Yes really. And yet with the recognizable sarcasm and humor. I was really looking forward to this and the film did not disappoint in any way.

Nowhere does the film try something completely new: the well-known "ex killer is forced to do his trick again". See also: The Equalizer, John Wick, all Rambo movies, Commando, the entire Jason Statham body of work and about all movies from the 80s.

But all the familiar, maybe even chewed-up, elements and twists still feel fresh because it is presented with a big wink.

There is a slow 80s sauce over the film, but thanks to smooth editing and wonderfully filmed action, it is still a nice contemporary film.

Just when you think you've ended up in yet another action flick cliché, Odenkirk knows how to give it an original twist with his inimitable head.

Take the scene where he is casually eating a steak in the crook's nightclub, the lion's den. It's cheesy 80s Mel Gibson, but even more over the top.

Or the great brawl on the bus, which you think is over, but then goes on. Then you can't help but slap your thighs with both flat hands.

Add to that a striking soundtrack and you really have a night of top entertainment.

4.5 stars

A very nice action movie with a great protagonist. Bob Odenkirk plays the lead. Odenkirk is almost 60 years old at the time of writing. An elderly man. Not the fastest anymore. The film uses that aspect very strongly by throwing the hero into the action scenes a bit stiff and fixed. In this way, the action scenes are automatically provided with a touch of humor and action figure Hutch immediately has a sympathetic tragicomic appearance.

Well, what a midlife crisis can't bring about. Hutch is not a noble hero. He seeks confrontations. He provokes. He lights the fuse. The crooks he fights are parables of bad guys. Together with the action scenes, this exaggerated stereotyping of the crooks ensures that the film always works under a humorous layer. It's mostly humor with a black edge. Bit dry too. Nice.

Director Ilya Naishuller sets the pace with his American debut. Lots of scene changes. Lots of cuts. Lots of characters. A high body count. And all that in 92 minutes. The film is full of movement. There are hardly any moments of rest.

The fight scenes are very entertaining. The most fun takes place in a bus with a group of thugs from the street. Naishuller changes very nicely with the settings of the camera. Now for a longshot so that the choreography is clearly visible. Then again with short quick image changes closer to the action, which bring speed and dynamics into the scene. The slow Odenkirk, who is looking for his fighting form, provides the humor. A nice scene. And as far as I'm concerned, the best scene, although the finale may also be there.

Nice score by the way. The acts are accompanied by a pleasant soundtrack. I even heard Luther Allison pass by. Who? Just Luther Allison, blues guitarist and blues giant. Life's a Bitch. Great and just the perfect motto for this highly entertaining film.
