The somewhat sloppily executed title song initially suggests we're dealing with one of those bland 1960s sex comedies, but this is actually one of the best Tony Curtis comedies since Some Like It Hot. Curtis tries to carve out a niche for himself as a swimming pool salesman in California, where he's surrounded by people characterized, to varying degrees, by self-absorption or an almost touching naiveté in this satire on the superficiality of coastal California life. The film's poorly dubbed sound is particularly disturbing in David Draper's role as a sweet but not particularly bright bodybuilder. Claudia Cardinale and Sharon Tate, however, provide ample feminine grace. Curtis finally demonstrates his considerable, though often poorly utilized, comedic talent, and the famous ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, in his small role as the astrologer Madam Lavinia, proves he can be funny even without his puppets. A corny little film full of bizarre, but mostly successful twists that also makes you wonder how far Tate could have gotten if Charles Manson's gang had not murdered her two years after this film.

I'd only seen Sharon Tate in The Wrecking Crew with Dean Martin before, and in this film she also does a pretty good job as eye candy.

In my eyes, she wasn't a special actress, but unfortunately she didn't have the time to develop further.

Don't Make Waves has a nice summery atmosphere and even though the story is very simple, the film still manages to entertain.

Tony Curtis clearly enjoyed his role, and with all those beautiful actresses, I certainly can't blame him.

The ending is a bit messy, but overall it was a good pastime.

3*

I've been wanting to see this latest Mackendrick for ages, but I didn't have high expectations. It's a rather lighthearted, very sunny film with quite a bit of female (and male, for those interested) beauty. The aforementioned slo-mo scene with Sharon State stands out, but that's not all. Based on a book titled "Muscle Beach," it's not just about young people working up a sweat, almost naked, for a physique on a California beach, but also seems to address the competition between various businessmen/rich people, with Curtis's character causing a stir.

Lots of twists, a high level of farce, and a rather bizarre, bombastic finale, with the gentle, blond bear of a bodybuilder giving the story an unexpected twist. It might sound good, but ultimately it's nothing more than entertaining, with beautiful locations and, of course, excellent filming. And then there was Claudia Cardinale, whom I hadn't mentioned…

The film aims to be more substantial compared to the many flat sex comedies of that time, and that deserves an extra half point; 3.5*.
