Due to a misunderstanding, the American Henry Adams ends up in London. He doesn't know anyone there, has no money and can't find a job. He has to clean and eat garbage to survive. By chance he meets the old and wealthy brothers Roderick and Oliver Montpelier. They don't offer him any money but give him an envelope. They demand that he only open the cover at two o'clock and then see what amount it is. To Henry's surprise, the cover contains only a one million pound note. An attached note states that in exactly one month Henry must return the banknote undamaged.
