The space porcupines are back and occupying an apartment building. The only reason to watch this horror comedy is because it stars DiCaprio in his first leading role. He was about 16 years old at the time. Furthermore, this is a fairly bland Gremlins variant... While the first Critters film aimed for horror, this is no longer the case here.

Critters: 2.5*

Critters 2: 2.5*

Critters 3 : 2*

Not a bad choice in itself to choose a different setting, we have now seen the town from the first two films. So we get Critters in the big city. Or well, mostly Critters in an apartment complex. In this apartment complex we get to know all kinds of characters, which we know will soon become Critter food. If it ultimately turns out that almost everyone lives we can be a bit disappointed in those rolling gluttons. Apparently they like dishwashing liquid better, right? There is still enough screen time for the animals, because this time there is little time for the bounty hunters. When we don't see hungry monsters, we see all kinds of characters, including a Sarah Connor clone (probably the cutest character in the movie), an old couple, an obese and loud lady and our rather boring main character. But most memorable is her 'love interest' Josh. Not because of his personality, but because it is one of Leonardo DiCaprio's first film roles. So you see how divergent things can sometimes be; one young leading man becomes a superstar and wins Oscars, the other stars in The Mangler Reborn.

2.5 stars.

Direct-to-video sequels have always been a concept within the horror business that has caused viewers some concern and this third part is significantly lower in terms of level compared to the previous films. Once again an introduction that rattles on for too long without adding any flair and the acting is little to write home about, but in the end it is mainly a smaller-scale repetition of much better executed ideas. The Krites, who stir things up in a pleasant way, and the appearance of a young Leonardo DiCaprio in his film debut are still nice, but on the other hand, this film is considerably heavier. You have to be quite forgiving to enjoy this third part as much, which director Kristine Peterson provides with a completely interchangeable and unnecessary impression.
