A popular theme in the earlier, mid-nineties and even later, it was somewhat of a trend to send horror characters into space.

Hellraiser, Leprechaun and later even Jason. They all went into space. The only difference with Critters 4 is that it does work here, and it was one of the first series to do it.

The Critters already came from space so it's okay for them to return to space. Story is again not very good. But still good to entertain for an hour and a half. It is a direct sequel to the third part and picks up right where we left off. We get the return of Terrence Mann here and we also get Brad Dourif in this part who gives the meager story that little bit more. But it is again the critters themselves and their behavior that save the film. Just as fun a film as the second and third parts.

It is often seen as the low point in a film series, when one suddenly goes to space. From James Bond to horror villains like Pinhead or Jason and even Leprechaun. For Critters, however, it makes a little more sense; the beasts come from space. In fact, the first film opens with a scene that looks like a bad sci-fi. So it wasn't that crazy to go into space for Critters 4. At the helm this time is the producer of all Critters and screenwriter of Critters 3. It could all have been clumsy, ridiculous and over the top, but unfortunately Critters 4 fails badly. It is even an art that you manage to make a space film with Critters, Angela Bassett and Brad Dourif so incredibly boring. The monsters themselves are rarely shown, and for a large part of the time we mainly see characters walking around in a spaceship and typing miserably on keyboards and staring at screens. Still, it's admirable that such a wonderfully stupid concept with such funny creatures is executed in such a boring way.

2 stars.

It took the series four parts to finally collapse completely, despite the fact that something like Critters could have seriously benefited from a going-to-space concept. Unfortunately, director Rupert Harvey makes the very strange choice to significantly scale back the presence of the creatures and give priority to the development of the crew. It results in a whole that really looks indescribably boring and can hardly benefit from the distinctive setting. The Krites lack any hint of their humorous personalities and the cast performs miserably, with a small exception in Brad Dourif. Angela Bassett was clearly not interested in the progress of the production and her acting is far below par, but the other characters also hardly have any noteworthy features. Once the finale arrives, it is completely clear that the cake was over and that results in an inhumanly boring and forced whole, which is an insult even for such a pulp series.
