Slightly better than Women on the Verge..., this film feels less chaotic and more balanced, although the comic theme and bright colors dominate. It is a film that can be viewed and where drama (the great absentee in his earlier films) makes its appearance. Have to say I'm still not convinced by Almodóvar's early works. Incidentally, the film is a freely interpreted comic remake of The Collector (1965) by Almodóvar. Almost 3*.

There is a difference between kitsch and the conscious use of kitsch elements. With pastel colours, floral motifs and prints of a religious or erotic nature, Almodóvar creates his own original universe. In the US there was a lawsuit over the provocative content, after which the X rating was converted to no rating. It's all done with humor, especially the ode to Jacques Cousteau.

Banderas plays an obsessive fan who flouts all manners. He breaks into her apartment, beats and gags her. Yet he gradually commands sympathy. After all, he had a rough childhood. He tries to come to terms with this by traveling back to his native village in Extremadura, which produces a nice panorama.

Victoria Abril is my favorite Spanish actress. She plays a B-star who is addicted to opiates. In her numb state, she wants to feel pain. She is a masochist who is going to suffer from a severe form of Stockholm Syndrome. Two unstable personalities find each other.

Three character roles provide the necessary counterpoint. Francisco Rabal plays an elderly director of campy horror. Loles León plays the uninhibited Lola, the opposite of her sister. The expressively ugly Rossy de Palma plays one of her grotesque side roles, this time a virago on a scooter. Ennio Morricone adds music that at times sounds threatening like Psycho, at other times reassuring and romantic.

Fine Almodovar and also the film where Banderas gained name recognition among the general public. Here he plays a unstable person who was released from a mental institution. He falls madly in love with a former porn actress and drug addict. His approach to conquer her, on the other hand, is not very romantic. He takes it very literally by kidnapping and tying her up.

Despite this context, the film remains lighthearted. The character Ricky even elicits some sympathy despite all his missteps because you still feel like he really loves her. It also sometimes leads to comical situations. Furthermore, a number of fine camera images with mirrors. The slightly erotic scenes were also quite nice, especially those in the bath. Both grow closer to each other as twisted personalities. The free scene was rather humorous in nature, but cinematically quite okay with that ceiling mirror. I recently saw Verhoeven's Basic Instinct (1992).
