Absurd situations in this drama-comedy with the emphasis on comedy, because although the background is serious with incomprehension between parents and son and between the parents themselves, the hypocrisy of the father, the superficial patronizing of the mother, etc., it is nevertheless by far the funny thing that gets the upper hand and often generates hilarity (the herring scene).

Stylish (starting with the table scene made me feel like I was looking at a piece by Pinter) and a lot of ingenuity (the escalator, the meeting with the girl, the dancing ashtrays, the fly carving...)

Too bad those slapstick scenes at the end, but not so bad, because a very enjoyable film with excellent acting.

Praise is certainly for van Warmerdam who was responsible for the script and direction.

At times a ingeniously absurd film that is very reminiscent of the films of Roy Andersson - MovieMeter.nl (and consider this as a big compliment).

Great Warmerdam behind and in front of the scenes. In my opinion his best movie. The limited scenes and characters make the film feel like a play for the most part. Also due to the fact that he plays with dark shadows and illuminated spots.

The film is, as it were, a small work of art and is quite unique in the Low Countries. Jaco Van Dormael also dares to venture into something similar. Abel has become a quirky out of the box work by Van Warmerdam with special characters that you would not be able to imagine in real life. And yet the film feels everyday or familiar, perhaps also because of the theater feeling.

The beginning of the film - the Christmas dinner - is already a foretaste of what the film has to offer. Strong cast with excellent dialogues where the bickering is very contagious. A special figure that Abel tries to catch flies with scissors. But other scenes also catch the eye, such as the toilet scene or the visits of the girl or the psychiatrist.

A film that clearly plays the comic notes, but also under the skin that brings social sadness to the surface. strong!
