Van Warmerdam was clearly inspired by Jacquest Tati for this satire on the petit-bourgeois nature of the Netherlands in the 1950s. Set in the only (and still unpaved) street in a new housing development in a barren and dull sandy landscape, apart from an extremely dark production forest. Van Warmerdam himself plays the postman who does not hesitate to read the letters he has to deliver first, but the main character is a novice teenager Thomas [Leonard Lucieer] who is under the spell of the Congolese politician Patrice Lumumba who is regularly in the news. There is a sexually frustrated butcher [Jack Wouterse] whose wife [Annet Malherbe] rejects him and tries to assault his shop girls, there is a nearsighted hunter [Rudolf Lucieer], the eccentric Fat Willie [Theo van Gogh] who makes the street unsafe with his motorcycle and the attractive Agnes [Veerle Dobbelaere] who seems to want to seduce Thomas, but for what purpose? Superbly directed with perfect pantomime and sophisticated image compositions and full of familiar faces (including Loes Luca, Beppie Melissen, Olga Zuiderhoek) and often very funny, but a bit on the long side.

Van Warmerdam proves once again that you don't need much to make a good film other than a creative mind. The decor is kept very simple with a village consisting of two residential blocks and a forest. Little Thomas and the postman, each in his turn and each in his own way, are the mayonnaise between all the characters of the village.

The strength of the film lies in the characters, as so often I have the impression of Warmerdam. Visible antipoles provoke strange and funny events. All quite amusing, but I missed some coherence, a clear line, even though we are dealing with an absurdist film.

Excellent acting again. Van Warmerdam has it all nicely under control. Truly an enrichment for cinema in the Low Countries.

I was shocked when I read the summary. It seemed to me to be a rather dated bad comedy. But luckily I saw the movie anyway and really enjoyed it. The story of a small conservative folk village in the 1960s with some wrong characters. Somehow it reminds me of Dogville. The village in De Noorderlingen is barely 1 street big with an adjacent forest. And especially that forest was nicely done. Visually it is a lovely warm color palette, dressed with black humor. You have to think of directors like Wes Anderson or Roy Anderson. Although it is ultimately one of Warmerdam.

The film is a joy to watch and the humor may not be top notch throughout the film, but it certainly has its moments. One of the better Dutch films and especially one that leaves its own mark in terms of style.
