Seen the remake a long time ago... and now finally picked up the regular DVD edition in a second-hand DVD store in Dordrecht. This one, of course, was truly French... over American.

Yes, French... that black and white was generally well chosen, with this film reminiscent of an old-fashioned French film noir. I already knew the story from the remake, but it still managed to touch and oppress me again. Partly thanks to the much darker atmosphere. Those roulette scenes were shot beautifully and cleanly and the sweat of fear can be smelled. The organizers are cold and slick, the participants very superlative and Sebastien is also very well portrayed here and you just have to realize that things like this can happen just around the corner from you.

As said, the atmosphere was already fine and the soundtracks or any music is also kept away, which also comes across as realism. The ending is very exciting and it's a shame that I already knew how it would end. A lucky scene would have been so refreshing after a claustrophobic nightmare.

4.5*

It seemed to be getting good. I had already seen the original with Jason Statham which became an average thriller. So my hopes went to this original. The black and white approach makes the whole thing a bit harder and more timeless. Would you think. When they are on the phone with typical Nokias, the atmosphere completely disappears. And there isn't much spice in it either. Statham then acted much better. Which says more about these actors than Statham. The whole is a bit less sweet than his remake, but it can't really live up to it either. It seemed like a movie that would have been provocative in the 70s, but now it comes across as rather bland.

Nice raw mystery thriller. It's solid, entertaining and exciting, for a small shot. And that while it gets off to a fairly slow start, it is not exactly unpredictable, sometimes a bit too repeated and rather woodenly filmed and acted. The protagonist portrays the character relatively emotionless and it doesn't feel believable that he, as a silent, wimpy lad, suddenly goes into the unknown like this. With all those less positive points I normally rarely come up with a sufficient score, but this low-budget print still feels fine, the idea is good and I kind of like the gritty.
