An underrated film by an underrated director. The radio show ending is a metaphor for death. From that perspective, the film is not sentimental or nostalgic at all. On the contrary, the dying of an old man is nothing to be sad about, says the angel of death. No eulogies, no farewell speeches, no "minute of silence"... Look at the final scene, in which the entire cast sings a hymn about the afterlife. It is a wild scene on that stage. There is dancing, singing, partying, laughing... The very last scene in the very last film by Altman, who himself would die shortly after the release.
That is how I want to say goodbye to life as well.

For some reason, I found this film less hilarious and also less heartwarming than when I saw it for the first time. Several great performances, a wonderful central role by Garrison Keillor as (more or less) himself, superbly edited so that all the characters in this characteristic Altman ensemble get their moment in the spotlight, Dusty & Lefty's jokes remain funny (a nice collection can be found on the IMDb quotes page), and since I always get a lump in my throat from John Ford's films Red River Valley, I manage to do that here too, but the emotional impact of the whole thing is simply less the second time around. Maybe on a third time... The duets by Streep and Tomlin are the highlight for me.
It is remarkable how few comments there are on this final film by a renowned director, with so many stars who seized their last chance to work with the master.

When Robert Altman was making this film, he was also undergoing chemotherapy. Paul Thomas Anderson was standing by to finish the film in the event that Altman passed away. Despite this, Altman was already planning his next film. He managed to complete this film, but it became his very last.
This is certainly not Altman's best film, but a worthy final chord. About a radio show that is completely out of touch with the times. About nostalgia. About small-town America. About the stage and your private life, and the relationship between them. At times almost a light version of Nashville. But it goes less deep and it is less complex. Also a film about death. And a film about a group of people who are perhaps trying to postpone the end by remaining silent about it. Just like the great Altman some 20 years ago. One of the most fascinating directors the US has ever produced.
