Marx Brothers will never be my thing. After Duck Soup it took me a while to give them another try. This 'A night at the opera' continues in the same trend. Quite busy and the brothers seem far from sympathetic. A big difference with comedians like Chaplin, Keaton or Lloyd. The film also feels dated. Humor is difficult in itself, and this film is not timeless it turns out.

You notice that the Marx Brothers have talent, but it never really shows. Too bad, because they are certainly not bad and I was hoping to see more of that with this film.

Good film in which two opera singers are both offered a contract. The story is a bit messy at times. More than enough well-developed funny situations. Also some funny dialogues. The few musical parts take the momentum out of the movie a bit. My first encounter with the Marx Brothers.

Duck Soup 2. Groucho once again plays a character who, despite his striking incompetence, has ended up in a management position. Together with his two clownish brothers, he defies the laws of logic from start to finish. Although there are some differences to note with Duck Soup. First and foremost, Groucho seems much more self-aware and more responsive to the crowd by sporadically breaking the fourth wall. Also the story itself, chaotic and unruly as it may be, generally comes across more serious and actually implements a somewhat meager, but nevertheless genuine love story. There are also more singing and dancing scenes, with the grande finale in the opera house being all but destroyed by the three brothers. Film-wise there are also some jumps, especially the editing is lousy at times. Consider, for example, the scene in the beginning, where the two brothers try to enter into a contract.

What more is there to say? An unfunny and annoying spectacle. The romantic subplot is virtually without a chance due to the abundant visual antics, as none of the characters get the chance to develop. Who are all these people? If all this was still somewhat entertaining, I would of course change the tone, but I couldn't wait until it was all over.
