Very strange film - is this even a film? - that cannot be classified in any film genre. It drips with spiritualism, Tarkovsky's films are nothing compared to that. That is why it is so difficult to put into words what is so special about this film. You can only judge this film from your feelings, not from your mind. That is why this film is not susceptible to explanation. At least, that is how I see it. The images are beautiful in any case, especially with those sheep. Well, except for one image.

The Soviet authorities at the time were not so enthusiastic about this work of Parajanov, which is not so surprising actually. Parajanov was not allowed to make films for 10 years after Sayat Nova.

3.5*

Armenian director Sergei Parajanov made a unique poetic biography about the poet of the same name in 1969 with 'Sayat Nova'. The film became known outside Armenia under the title 'The Color of Pomegranates' and the color red dominates the associative images that will remain in your memory forever. Stylistically it reminds one of a combination of Tarkovsky and Bunuel who made somewhat comparable visual splendor. Do not try to understand anything of the story, but look at the impressive splendor of what is shown.

Not a film to watch with a crate of beer and a bag of chips. More of an artful film that you have to record. The film is peppered with cultural and religious practices supplemented with visual splendor and musical frills.

Quite nice to see it all once, but also tiring. The images are sometimes surreal, but are beautifully presented. In terms of content, I thought it was a mixed bag. It is the visual aspect that scores high.
