Judy plot

"Judy Garland: The Legend Behind the Rainbow."

Winter 1968. Showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform in a sold-out run at nightclub The Talk of the Town. It's been 30 years since she became world famous in 'The Wizard of Oz', but now that her voice has weakened, the dramatic intensity has only increased. As she prepares for the show, fights with management, flirts with musicians, and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her humor and warmth shine through.

Zellweger's portrayal as Judy Garland is in many ways reminiscent of Michelle Williams' Emmy-winning role as Gwen Verdon in Fosse/Verdon. Zellweger from a distance exactly on Judy Garland in a bravura rendition in which she sang all the songs herself. Zellweger doesn't sound like the Garland we know, but this biographical film is about her last years in life, when her voice has been considerably weakened due to her enormous insecurities and the addiction to pills caused by MGM studios. Zellweger makes up for her shortcomings as a singer with the same passion and emotion that made Garland so legendary.

Even Liza Minnelli never ventured into a rendition of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow', so it's not surprising that Zellweger's interpretation of Garland's signature tune has long been the subject of debate. In my opinion, Zellweger touches the essence of the song, but also exposes the tormented soul of the tragic hero Judy Garland. Zellweger's playing sometimes looks a bit mechanical, but that also seems to fit the role of a diva who desperately tries to keep something of her star status alive. Screenwriter Tom Edge excels in the compact but effective flashbacks to 1938 and makes it painfully clear how Garland fell victim to a studio system that made enormously high demands. Richard Cordery impresses as Louis B Mayer, a master manipulator who ruthlessly played on Garland's insecurities, but also made her feel special. His scenes with Darci Shaw as young Judy are unforgettable. A somewhat depressing film, but the good acting makes up for it, as well as the supporting work of Phil Dunster and Andy Nyman in a heartbreaking scene that shows why Judy is so loved by the LGBT community.

I'm actually kind of pissed that this biopic is really only about the demise of Judy Garland, when she made such wonderful films as The Wizard of Oz[/ url] (1939), [url=https://www.moviemeter.nl/film/3995]Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), Easter Parade (1948) and A Star Is Born (1954).

The initial discussion of this topic was about whether it was the right choice to cast Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland. My answer to that question is “yes”. Based on Garland's films that I have seen (about 12), I come to the conclusion that Zellweger portrays a lifelike Garland, including her humor, her quirks and her interpretations of the songs (although the original versions are of course better ).

All in all, I think it's an interesting movie. But I continue to regret that we have to make do with a handful of flashbacks about Garland's early years and her relationship with media mogul Louis B. Mayer (MGM). That coming-of-age period deserves more attention and perhaps even a film of its own.

“I love you all. You won't forget me, will you? Promise you won't.”

Renée Zellweger is unparalleled as Judy Garland, and this movie shows how Hollywood and everything that goes with it can completely swallow a young girl (and spit it out when she wants). The first scene between Garland and studio boss Louis B. Mayer is a good example of this.

It's a pity that the script drops a lot of stitches, and there are many moments in the film where it's just plain boring. Judy Garland must have lived a very interesting life, but here you only get to see the beginning and end. One reviewer described the movie with the following sentence, “If you didn't know anything about Judy Garland before this movie, you still don't.” I agree with that, and that's fine deadly for a biopic.
