Safe Home for Christmas

Green Book reinforces the painful myth that racism is mainly the product of ignorance - if you (Mortensen) experience first-hand what is going on, you will eventually know better in the last act. With such a treatment of a theme that still has such a strong buzz around it, you deserve an Oscar for passivity and shortsightedness. The scene at the meadow [already much discussed in my opinion] is really insufferable.

Ali's eclectic role takes on a sour aftertaste as soon as it turns out that his exceptional position mainly serves to feed a dormant white savior complex.

A movie made for the comfort of white people like me. And that stuck. Because Farrelly has succeeded in his aim with flying colors, as it turned out in a full cinema room this afternoon and an even fuller room Sunday evening. Spike Lee was also anything but subtle [and I notice that since my vision last fall I have started to think more and more critically about that film], but I still prefer to get that kick in the stomach.

More comedy than drama, it's all handled very lightly. And that with an underlying theme around racism, which unfortunately never dares to surface. On the contrary, it feels quite uncomfortable. The white savior of the black man in trouble. More than that, he has to teach the black man what black music sounds like and what black people usually eat. It will probably not have been intended so badly by the makers, but a film like this in 2020 should know better. And if you're doing a biography about a pianist, put that man in the center and not the driver. The script was co-written by Vallelonga's son, which explains the rather white approach. Normally that doesn't matter much to me, but if you make a film where racism still wants to address an important theme, it doesn't come across well. That such a film wins over Black Panther and certainly BlacKkKlansman, I can well imagine that Spike Lee is not served by this.

Positive are the two protagonists who provide wonderful scenes and are attuned to each other. And aside from the subject of racism, the humor isn't that bad. The film makes for a sluggish road movie, although it is very predictable. A sweet Christmas movie, but it will never be more.

Wonderful movie! Very clever how this beforehand extremely unlikely friendship is portrayed in a credible way. Also quite impressed by Mortensen, whom I didn't see as a very serious actor thanks to his adventures with the ring, but who - even after Captain Fantastic - turns out to be a class act. As mentioned, the music is also wonderful. What also impressed me is that you constantly feel the tension, because always, at any moment, something very unpleasant can happen. You should live with it...

You can only feel that tension if you care about the characters and that is very much the case here. You give both men everything. Heartwarming film of the finest kind.
