My third Tarkovsky and the best man again does not make it easy for the casual viewer. I could appreciate the image of the time and philosophical reflections, some stylized shots as well, but the fragmentary story does not always manage to keep the attention. Strangely enough, the title character doesn't really matter that much in this film, we don't see how exactly he came to his masterpiece.

3*.

After watching Marketa Lazarová (1967) yesterday, tonight I once again ventured into this film by Tarkovsky, which has in common with the other one that it The story of Andrey Rublyov is set in the Middle Ages. Visually, the films are certainly not inferior to each other, but I liked the story of Andrey Rublyov clearly better. The chapter with that bell casting was very long, I would have liked it shorter. I found the part that dealt with the attack by the Tatars the most impressive. Well, things were not gentle in the Middle Ages. Furthermore, this film is full of religious symbolism, much more than in the film Marketa Lazarová I mentioned. This Andrey Rublyov is quite a sacred work, made in the "atheistic" Soviet Union. I put that word in quotes because those Russians weren't that atheistic at all. This has been clearly proven in today's Russia. Tarkovsky must also have been a very religious person, otherwise I don't think you can make such a thoroughly religious film.

4.5*

Too fragmentary to really take me to higher realms, like Solyaris did not so long ago. Add another half for the last few minutes.
