Waking Life takes you into several dream sequences of a young man. He gets a lift from some guy who drives a boat car and from there it goes wild with all kinds of quasi-profound conversations and semi-shocking scenes. I thought it was all a lot of nonsense, as Linklater often showed in his 'Before' films. The punch line at the end was still nice, but for that you have to resist all self-proclaimed philosophers who hang up whole stories in front of the young man.

I'm not a big fan of Waking Life's rotoscope style either. Because of the restless shaking of the image, but also the characters or objects captured in the image, it is very distracting. Nevertheless, Linklater has incorporated some funny visual finds, in which this style still has an added value. Fortunately, otherwise this film would not have come out with a meager pass!

There is clearly an attempt to convey a message with topics such as the current living system, being human, dreams and a sense of reality. Visually it has a similar style to 'A scanner Darkly' and it is nice to find such a half drawing show as a variation. But I didn't find those animations particularly beautiful or eccentric (with the exception of that metamorphosis into two snowy postures). Long monologues by intellectuals form the basis and I have the idea that Richard Linklater does not want to convey much more than these visions. The main aim seems to be to spread certain knowledge and views. It wasn't really clear to me when the main character was or wasn't dreaming, but to be honest I didn't really care that much either. All in all it results in an idiosyncratic but distant creation.

Excellent film about a young man who no longer knows whether he is dreaming or awake. An original film on several levels. There isn't really a story. The film consists of short monologues and dialogues (deep, philosophical and understandable). Visually it also looks beautiful, with the images animated later.
