Enjoy, and nothing more than enjoy. The story seems simple at first, but towards the end there are interesting twists, making Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust clearly more than just another good versus evil action lick. Until then, enjoying great action, funny characters and a true masterpiece on a visual level. The drawing style is pleasing to the eye. Because of the English dub, the film reminded me a lot of the many cartoons I saw as a child. This is wonderful horror with a high fantasy content. The locations are sometimes reminiscent of the macabre places of, for example, The Lord of the Rings, while the massive flying desert giants are reminiscent of Dune. Post-apocalyptic settings, like here in Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, I find especially interesting when there's a good dash of horror/fantasy involved. The visual qualities also apply to the monsters, locations and the action. It looks cool and very imaginative. In the first hour, one confrontation quickly follows the other, after which the gas is slowed down for a nice conclusion. It should be clear that I like this one clearly better than the Vampire Hunter D from 1985.

Vampire D is one of the many vampire movies, but this time an animation. 15 years after the cult animation (which I haven't seen yet) this sequel is here. And if I read the reviews a bit, this should be a better movie. I can kind of imagine, considering the '85 version was a pioneer and the series had better techniques and budgets. The results are impressive. If Ghibli ever made a vampire movie, it would be something along these lines. But even more violence. It has become a beautiful imaginative film with a lot of horror, gothic and apocalyptic western. Movies like Van Helsing, Priest and Blade II have clearly looked at this.

The film is beautiful and imaginative, but at times it lacks some atmosphere to really become a hit. The love story was sometimes less interesting and some characters could be explored a little more. But I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Just adding a few things here.

An anime where I have to sin against my own rules. Normally I always try to go for the original dub, but it's so broken here that it's just unheard of. One of the first anime that was developed specifically with the Western market in mind and therefore also had an English language primary dub. But just go for the Japanese, which is not immediately exceptional, but does reach a normal basic level.

Furthermore, it is a solid upgrade compared to the 80s animation. Much richer in detail and animation. You can see Amano's style better, although it is certainly not yet a 1 on 1 adaptation. Even now that seems pretty impossible for a movie with normal running time. Kawajiri also adds his own accents, which should be a bit of a stretch. Perhaps not quite as big a name as Oshii or Otomo, but one who has certainly contributed to the popularity of anime in the West. But then the "bad name" that the films got among concerned Western parents.

A cool mix of (Gothic) horror, demonic horror, fantasy and sci-fi. It's a rather unusual combination, but it works well. A simple film further, purely aimed at genre fun, but those who feel like it will find an original and creative work in this film.

4.0* and a detailed review
