Surprisingly high ratings here, but surely it wasn't all that special? Thematically, there's nothing new to see, the animation is decent but nothing special, and the songs are okay but not quite my taste, nor particularly memorable. It's a somewhat dull film built on a fun idea, but with a fairly original story. 2.0*.

A rainy Saturday afternoon. A man (40) puts on "KPop Demon Hunters" (2025). He hears Dutch dubbing. Netflix is going off again...

I went ahead with the English version anyway. It's a shame that "KPop Demon Hunters" (2025) has a somewhat predictable story, because the film certainly has its own unique feel. The references to popular Korean culture are even present in the dialogue and lyrics. Genuinely catchy songs, too. Energetic action scenes in the tradition of better Asian animation. It's a shame, though, that lead actor Rumi lacks a bit of chemistry with Mira and Zoey. Their sisterhood will never truly reach Pixar levels.

Really fun, and I understand why this is so popular right now. It's a fun combination of K-pop and a superhero story. Pure entertainment with a deeper layer, and on top of that, catchy K-pop songs with dance moves that half of TikTokers are naturally crazy about.

The story itself doesn't offer anything new. It's all about the usual themes of good vs. evil, self-belief, the hero(ine) with a mysterious background, and so on. However, the way it's presented is quite original.

If the film were solely based on its gimmick, I'd consider it a weak hype, but it's actually a well-crafted film. The characters are likable (though ultimately, only Rumi and Jinu have any real depth), the animation is beautiful, the story is well-constructed, the whole premise with Honmoon and Gwi-Ma is well-developed, and the music is genuinely good. Golden deservedly became a huge hit, but Soda Pop is also a wonderful earworm. What you often see in such films is that the music is somewhat of an afterthought, with only a few bland songs being written, but that's not the case here: they're all hit-worthy songs that aren't secondary to the story.

And as mentioned above: the songs are truly part of the story, and the music plays a significant role in the plot and influences it. They're not simply songs interspersed with the story, and I think that's worth noting.

All in all, it's really something we need these days: entertainment, fun songs, fun dances, a beautiful message, and a classic story about good and evil. Is this a masterpiece? No. Does it deserve all the popularity? Yes.
