How to Train Your Dragon plot

"The legend is real."

The young teenage Hiccup, a Viking, lives with his tribe on the island of Berk, which has been attacked by various types of dragons for generations. Because of the war that has arisen, Hiccup is expected to fight the dragons. In order to be seen as a true Viking, Hiccup must also kill one. However, he is small and can hardly handle weapons. Even his father, chief Stoick, tries to keep him out of danger. When Hiccup befriends a wounded dragon one day, he sees an opportunity to change the future of his tribe.

I enjoyed myself quite a bit. Not everything works equally well, the supporting characters are a bit cartoonish (also the haircuts etc.) and that works in an animated film, here it works much less. Only Butler and Nick Frost manage to avoid that reasonably well. Butler can now convert his voice role into a real role and visibly enjoys himself without going too far, well done. Frost still manages to evoke some emotion. Main character Thames is completely colorless and the CGI is not always that good either. But the action is okay, the pace is fine (the film is a bit longer than the animated film and clocks in at two hours but you don't feel that) and the film doesn't really do anything wrong. 3.0*.

Good movie about a young viking who doesn't have it in him to kill a dragon, but tames one. A live-action remake from the same director. It all looks good, but I thought the dragons worked better in the animated version. It remains a nice story and the movie is entertaining from start to finish with more than enough action. Gerard Butler is perfectly cast.

Redundant and inevitably inferior remake of the excellent 2010 animated film about a young Viking [Mason Thames] who wants to prove to his father [Gerard Butler] that he can be a worthy successor as chieftain by killing a dragon. He manages to wound the most feared dragon, but instead of giving it the coup de grace, he decides to take care of it and teach it to fly again. More action (with a few scenes that can be quite scary for little ones) and more comedy, but too little attention for the friendship that develops and that made the original so memorable. Thames also only scores a narrow pass in the lead role. Quite enjoyable if you haven't seen the original.
