With clear pros and cons. Arthur and the Minimoys is actually the umpteenth in the modern series of imaginative children's films. Luc Besson doesn't change that. Just as much as Madonna (can't even pick out one), Snoop Dogg and Robert de Niro can take the film to the next level. De Niro definitely didn't come into his own here. The only nice voice over is that of David Bowie, but he is the only one from this set that has at least some feeling with this genre.

Furthermore, Arthur and the Minimoys follows the fixed formula. A kind child with broad interests tries to help his parent/guardian in a difficult matter and is eventually helped by fairytale characters. The first part is pretty fun. Freddie Highmore is no longer a child star, but in those days very suitable for these kinds of roles. A fine actor who I hope continues his strong streak into his adult years. He puts down a sympathetic Arthur. Once under the minimoys, it's a shame everything is animated. Visually, the quality deteriorates. The CGI is ugly by 2006 standards. Despite the well-trodden paths and milked-out formulas, Arthur's adventure is quite fun. You have the usual club of good guys and bad guys. An excellent children's film, but Arthur And The Minimoys offers nothing extra for experienced film viewers.

This is a very enjoyable and successful film. The combination of film with real human actors in the big world and animation in the small world of the Minimoys works very well. It is very adventurous with nice characters and the necessary humor. It was hard for me to believe that the grandmother was played by Mia Farrow. What a beautiful woman she still is!
