Le Grand Bleu plot

"Danger...Like Passion...Runs Deep"

Enzo and Jacques know each other from their native village, when diving was already their passion. One day, Jacques' father dies while diving. Years later, Jacques is tested by scientists, who find that when he dives into icy water, his body seems to react like a dolphin's. Johanna, present at the experiments, falls for the mysterious dolphin man and follows him to Italy. Enzo, now world diving champion, has challenged Jacques to a competition, because he knows that he is the only diver in the world who could beat him.

Still a bit of a disappointment the first time, although I doubt if it was the first time because the diving competitions look slightly familiar to me.

Besson manages to create an imaginative atmosphere with extraordinary physical performances, soaring music, fascinating underwater cinema and an elusive protagonist. Something that should suffice for a special film. Although the film can indeed be called special, I mean that negatively in this case. Not only does the core of the story seem blurry, there is too much deviation from the underwater world, but the film also derails a bit in a too light-hearted, sometimes cool, atmosphere. The second point in particular is what seems to hurt the film the most. Too often the water is exchanged for endless worries on dry land that don't seem to really matter. For example, the relationship between Jacques and the bumbling giggle-butt Johanna, a misplaced character and, moreover, a relationship that doesn't add much. Arquette therefore sometimes to the point of annoying, Reno, on the other hand, strong as the shocking macho and Barr fine as the mystery.

To really make an impression, Le Grand Bleu loses itself too much in its own length and peripheral matters. The underwater images and fascination that both Jacques and Enzo have can be felt there and against it and I am of the opinion that the film definitely needs a second viewing for a full appreciation. Nice to see for now.

Beautiful images of the sea and dolphins. But the movie is really too long. Saw the director's cut. It also becomes too much repetition of deep sea diving in the long run. A nice soundtrack though. I especially like the beginning and the last 30 minutes. The acting of Jean Reno also stands out. He really stands out and is entertaining here. Curious about the normal version.

Reasonable film about two diving friends who are evenly matched in diving. The characters and story are not too much. In addition, the film is really too long (perhaps that the shorter version is better). However, it all looks good with beautiful locations and also beautiful underwater shots. Eric Serra's well-presented music fits in well with the whole. A narrow 3.0 stars.
