“I'm history! No, I'm mythology! Nah, I don't care what I am. I'm free-hee!”

Still one of my favorite animated movies. Everything that makes Disney animated films so interesting and entertaining to watch is in here. Strong characters, brilliant animation, fun humor, great music, drama, suspense and even some romance. With a feel-good ending, of course. All the voice actors are excellent, but Robin Williams as Genie stands out. All his scenes are gold. With perfect side characters like Abu, Iago, Sultan and bad guy Jafar. And I'm still kind of in love with Princess Jasmine, one of the best female characters to come out of Disney's stable.

As a child I saw this film many times in Dutch; now it was time for the English version, which I saw in tandem with the live action. It is clear that this was made pre-9/11 and the live-action post-9/11, given that Allah is still quoted in this film, while any reference to Allah in the live action film has been rigorously removed.

I think this is the first Disney film where the moral lessons about finding your own identity make their entrance. None of that was necessary for me, but it must be said that it fits reasonably well within the plot that continues like a train. Just the right amount of time is spent on each scene in my opinion. Too little could have caused ambiguities, too much could have caused the film to stutter and falter, something that clearly affects the live action.

An important role is of course the spirit, which is very well done by Robin Williams, although I have to say that in the Dutch version Pierre Bokma shows about the same kind of intensity and versatility in his voice and as far as I'm concerned is little less than Williams ( I just watched some Dutch fragments on YouTube). The parrot Iago also had its moments, especially in the scene with the horny flamingo. Jafar looks a bit queer, which is something that Disney has often done with the antagonists, for example also with Scar from The Lion King and that could have been done differently in my opinion.

At the cave of wonders you can see that the computer has been used, but otherwise the images are colorful and action-packed. The songs are not too irritating, with the song during the carpet scene actually quite appropriate.

The film ends up somewhere between 2.5* and 3*. I'll just round up. 3* so.

From the late '80s, Disney experienced a revival, with this free adaptation of a One Thousand and One Nights fairy tale being one of the highlights. Oriental clichés were used: a fakir on a nail bed, a sword swallower, a bazaar and a harem. Striking are the clear lines and colours, the snow-white teeth, the shiny jewels, and spectacular scenes with a lot of movement.

The three main human characters - Aladdin, Jasmine and Jafar - have an animal companion. These animals have human characteristics, they sympathize and provide a comical note. The same goes for the flying carpet. The good characters usually wear blue and white; the bad guys red and black. Good and evil are also represented by two metal attributes: the magic lamp and the serpentine staff of Jafar, the evil counselor with the demonic appearance. Jasmine is the most beautiful of all Disney princesses, and she takes a more active role than her predecessors. The Spirit, with its many metamorphoses, provides humor in particular.

An army of employees was needed to achieve an impressive visual result. All phases were covered, with early sketches, storyboards and live sessions. The dialogues were recorded before the images existed, with an improvising Robin Williams who incorporated a lot of voices and imitations in his role of Ghost.

It is an animated musical, with a smooth alternation between dialogues and appropriate songs. Alan Menken's music alternates between orientalism, humor and romance. Each love scene features the theme of A Whole New World, the duet whose best version is only heard during the credits, sung by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle. Although intended for children, the original English version in particular remains very nice for adults.
