Better than part II, I had long thought, but that is disappointing especially because The Return of Jafar never got boring. The first half is still the best with one nice song and a reasonable pace and reasonable development of the story. After that everything just gets stretched, the necessary unnecessary subplots come along, many songs come along that are really boring and it also loses the right narrative tempo. The animation is mediocre and the voice work is soporific. And yes, Jafar is a nice enemy, which is now missed. 1.5*.

After The Return of Jafar and a television series, there was also a third Aladdin film. While this King of Thieves feels like a long episode of the series; the animation isn't nearly as good as the first movie or even The Return of Jafar. King of Thieves is again much of the same; again the film is about whether or not you can trust a certain figure and give people a chance. It seems that no one is allowed to change anything about that formula. In addition, there are also a lot of songs, but this time they are mainly forced, annoying and really anything but catchy. And of course the film is full of references, especially a lot of nods to other Disney work. Those winks aren't cute or smart, though. At one point, the ghost burps and briefly changes into Pumba from The Lion King as a result. Well.

As for that mind; Robin Williams is back and doing the voice again, instead of Dan Castellaneta. That should give this film a little more level, but they don't do much with it. Williams and the ghost are pushed into the background and barely appear for much of the film. The film is purely about Aladdin and his father and that is the least interesting aspect of the film. During the climax Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - also with John Rhys-Davies - is imitated, but seems to forget that you can use a ghost or flying carpet in such a climax. But no, these nice figures are allowed to sit on the reserve bench and occasionally pop up. It makes this King of Thieves the least fun Aladdin by far. Just give me an episode of the series, they're a lot shorter.

2 stars.
