The Sea Hawk (1940)

Solid adventure film that is a bit too light in the first hour but then becomes grimmer and better. I'm not really disappointed with Flynn, although he does a reasonable job here. More convincing are Rains (always good), Daniell and Robson as Queen Elizabeth (who, by the way, she plays three had also played in Fire over England a year earlier). Director Michael Curtiz delivers the best performance and Sol Polito's camera work is also breathtaking. Conclusion: excellent film that is still more than worth seeing.

Excellent film about an English captain who sinks a Spanish ship without the Queen's permission. Adventure, tension, action, drama, romance and some humor all perfectly dosed. Partly because of this, the whole thing looks quite smooth. The camera work also manages to be surprising here and there (especially for a film from that time). Another excellent collaboration from Michael Curtiz and Errol Flynn.

A film with the necessary action, Errol Flynn in a role that suits him and beautiful images. And yet the film held little interest for me. It seemed to be quite standard, although fortunately the film does have some nice moments. Michael Curtiz did better with Aventures of Robin Hood a few years earlier (not to mention Casablanca). Then this is somewhat insignificant. For genre lovers, but otherwise one from the forgotten corner.
