A movie I expected more from. I thought I saw a youth film style Black Beauty. But the makers think they can already score by performing a young face on a beautiful horse with some strings in the background. Because watching two hours how a boy befriends a horse is a bit thin as a story. With moments (on the island for example) the film was just extremely boring. And it's not quality either. Bad acting and just not pretty to watch. Which is a shame, because you would expect that with a film about a horse. A miss.

Several beautiful scenes of humans and animals and that is where the value of the film lies. The story is quite predictable. Also worth remembering is the lived-in act of old rascal Mickey Rooney.

Beautiful family film produced by Coppola, which still looks good and unfortunately has fallen into oblivion. Yes, the first hour is truly majestic dreamy cinema and, moreover, completely visual, with not a word of dialogue for half an hour.

Black Stallion is set shortly after the war. Alec and his father are on a ship in the Mediterranean Sea but are shipwrecked in a storm. The father dies we later learn, but Alec is rescued by a beautiful black Arabian thoroughbred, which he then tames.

This is an example of a youth film as they were made in the pre-internet era: full of good feelings, without violence, without swearing and with a meaningful and spiritually approached subject: the bond between man and animal. Perhaps one should take more examples from these kinds of films. The only thing that bothered me was the lack of drama. The death of the father is not emotionally reflected in this story at all, even though it seemed important to me. On the other hand, I do understand that this is a youth film and they wanted to keep it all light.
