An ambitious film but not successful. It all looks okay and the period of 17th century Spain is beautifully depicted, but what a sad script. I couldn't follow at all. And it's clearly not me... this is a failed attempt to condense a series of five books into a two-hour movie. This epic needed much more than that to unravel all the intrigue. Too much information has been left out to get a common thread. Last year I just had the same problem with Arn the Templar. Actually, these are stories that come into their own as a TV series.

You are thrown from one scene to the next without any continuity. The ties between the different characters are also meaningless. How little do you see Alatriste and Inigo together in a scene when their bond is supposed to be one of the most important in the movie? However bad the "bad guy" Malatesta is always deployed, always aiming for threat and confrontation ... And so on and so on. Not the best movie to watch, but luckily it was visually enjoyable.

Ah, that comment that it's a film adaptation of a book series explains why it seems so fragmented. Makes sure that regular scenes, which probably should have been a climax, are now rather caricatured due to a lack of structure. That, combined with swelling romantic music... No, a large budget (and it shows) is no guarantee for a good film. Incidentally, I do have my doubts about the historical accuracy; I haven't seen a halberd.

And me and the Spanish soul don't match. All those swollen words and impossible loves, a sober farmer like me cannot understand that. So I lost interest after an hour, and that's why I don't get further than **.

Alatriste is a film I never saw before but wanted to see because of my interest in history. I am also a fan of Viggo Mortensen. Still, Alatriste is not a high flyer. The story is also a bit messy and never gets too interesting. Events are told rather than seen happening. As a result, it often becomes a talk film that it almost makes you dizzy, especially with that fast Spanish language. This would fit better in a series like El Cid does for example. Much better and taking the time to tell the story.
