A fun, entertaining film, with loose and natural acting, with a good mix of tension and humor. The story, which is based on true events, remains interesting and captivating until the last moment.

The sixth most popular film at the British box office in 1955, the film's success saw Sir John Mills named the most popular film star in Britain that year.

The film is based on "Operation Source", and was considered a failure in many respects. The Germans easily repaired the damage to the Tirpitz. Historians William Garzke and Robert Dulin said this was one of the most remarkable achievements of naval engineering during World War II. The Tirpitz was later sunk by RAF Squadron 617 in November 1944 using gigantic six-ton bombs. Original military equipment from the Second World War was used. William Franklyn's voice was dubbed, as his own voice clashed with John Gregson's.

Historically not entirely correct, but the film contains enough ingredients for an entertaining ride. The suspense in particular plays an important role.

The Tirpitz.

With the week's sailing of Bismarck still fresh in their minds, it was clear to both the English and the Germans that the battleships were serious - there were opportunities for a quick battle, but also enormous risks of negative propaganda . With Bismarck it seemed to go the way of the Germans for a while with the sinking of Hood, but within a week the German ship itself was on the bottom. There was no more risk to be taken with Tirpitz, so that ship was used to create a standoff near Norway - safely in a fjord. Or so the Germans thought.

But the English did not sit idle either - with all the headaches of the Bismarck dossier still fresh in their minds, everything was done to prevent a recurrence. And this film is about one of the parts of that. Somewhat in the GB tradition from just after the war - the soldiers are all the ideal son-in-law type, calm and reasoned, brave, eloquent and with clear diction. One of the rights you acquire from winning the war, I guess.

The film is a good documentary film, the story is told neatly and quite faithfully to history - and despite the above, enormous respect for the men who had enough courage to step into such a blow-up cigar. Apparently there is another one in a museum - I might keep an eye out if I ever get close. And near Edinburgh there is also a wreck on a sandbank - used as a target for aircraft after the war. The photo on Wikipedia shows that there is not much left. Apparently not really built for eternity. You can also clearly see how small those things were.

It's a shame that there are few images of the battleship. Not very surprising perhaps, but you can always hope.
