When Trumpets Fade plot

"In the heat of battle not all soldiers can be heroes."

This explosive war film takes you to the battlefield of Hurtgen Forest in the fall of 1944, where American soldiers fortify a bridge bombarded by enemy tanks. Hundreds of soldiers have already died and the survivors are often wounded and in shock. A frightened soldier promoted to Captain, a strong-willed nurse, an "angry young man" and an inexperienced recruit all desperately want to survive. In full war madness they grow into unlikely heroes.

I've been doubting for a long time what I think of When Trumpets Fade. The cast is not very impressive. The action is weak, but on the other hand, the atmosphere is good. You can clearly see the hardships of the soldiers in that gray forest. The traumas are interestingly portrayed, but did not fully convince me. When Trumpets Fade has good and weak moments. A typical three star war film.

Fairly.

It must have been about ten years since I saw this film on television. Over the years I forgot the movie title and the title search thread here on MM didn't help either. Until yesterday it turned out that this film is on YouTube with Dutch subtitles. It is of course not the best quality, but enthusiastic as I was I immediately looked at it.

The opening scene still impresses and is an immediate highlight.
Afterwards, the story has ups and downs, but it remains hard and believable at all times. The harshness of the war is not shown unnecessarily and the characters are also a lot more human than in many Hollywood products. The lieutenant who sends newbies first on their first patrol is a good example of this.
The last battle comes across a bit messy, but afterwards the circle comes to an end and there is that final scene that is identical to the first scene and still impresses.

The acting isn't exactly top notch, but the two lead actors, Ron Eldard and Zak Orth, are good enough. Tymothy Olyphant, on the other hand, has little to do with his role as a soldier going mad.

The war scenes are portrayed quite credibly. It's chaotic, but given the limitations of a TV production, it's not that bad in the end.
The trumpet chatter (what do you want with such a title) is less appealing.

Seen 20 years ago, not convinced, so tried again tonight but unfortunately could not convince again. It's just not it all.

The few few things I really liked is the round circle of beginning and end, Eldard walking with a dying person in the beginning himself, and the end of the movie itself is the dying one and certain mood shots, the sun among the trees, the countless corpses, the dead floating in the water during the great attack. But beyond that, the film just doesn't succeed. It all lacks some kind of conviction. For example, I think the tanks are downright bad, and as someone who knows quite a bit about war history, I would also expect much more from nature. The Germans were their enemy, but nature, mud, rain and fog were the real hardships and I rarely see that again. All in all it is a continuous deliberation, no or yes, good or bad, this weather moderate, that weather nice. Is this just a B movie anyone? Shot with a small budget, because that feeling creeps up on me constantly. In addition, the film can't continue to fascinate me, it doesn't appeal to me, and that doesn't have to be due to the script. Because although many people lose the story/script and find nothing special, I do have something like 'a day in a soldiers life', but of course it is who brings it and how you bring it. Ron Eldard as an absolute simple guy and anti-hero I don't think it's such a crazy choice.

Not a bad idea all in all, but unfortunately the execution...
