It's Christmas Eve and we find ourselves on the estate of a wealthy but divided and bickering family. A group of tough mercenaries then attack the mansion. It's up to a disillusioned Santa to take out these criminals, who are led by Ben.

Wirkola is a director I like to see make new films. He usually brings something original and his films are above average, just think of the Dead Snow series and Seven Sisters. Unfortunately, this Violent Night fails to do so. The action and kills are certainly decent, but at some moments the film does fall apart. There is a bit too much nonsense being told and the whole is not very credible. At first he doesn't seem to be particularly familiar with fighting and violence and has a relatively hard time killing someone. He barely gets the upper hand on the first 2 kills. Towards the end of the film they then come up with his distant past as Nicomund the Red, the tough Viking warrior he was 1000 years ago. So no for me the least Wirkola film I've seen, although I don't have anything for Christmas or Santa Claus either.
