Masterpiece of del Toro! How beautiful does this movie look! Placing the story during Mussolini's rise gives this story a whole new meaning. How the innocent Pinocchio experiences all this is impressive. The ending is also emotional and very beautiful! This film also ties in well with The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth. Understand that this can also be seen as a kind of trilogy. Given the similar theme, I can see that. It's great how Pinocchio's script is written this way. Think that besides Knor there will be 2 stop motion films in my top 10 this year.

The most famous version of Pinocchio is that of Disney from 1940. An animation film that set the bar high and at the same time determined the version of the story, because few will have read the book. After that there have been many adaptations and this year we even got to see 3 films! A Russian animation film that has fallen into oblivion, a Disney version where all the charm of the original was squeezed and then it was waiting for Guillermo del Toro's version.
The story is well known, but gets a somewhat different approach and some side stories are also different. This provides a fresh and surprising look at a well-known story. One that forms more of a whole and yet also a bit darker with loss and war. The animation is beautifully done. The songs stick less than with Disney and maybe they should not have belonged. Pinocchio's voice acting is sometimes a bit annoying, the rest does it well. The end result is a very beautiful version of Pinocchio that easily makes you forget the many other films about the wooden puppet. Especially the live action version from Disney earlier this year.

Good film about a woodworker who has not yet come to terms with the death of his son. A lot darker and more gloomy in tone compared to the andere versie also published this year. But that is also to be expected with Guillermo del Toro at the helm. The animation looks beautiful and gives the film its own look.
