Bland final.

Didn't even know I hadn't seen it yet, but I have with other franchises. Nowadays fans are overwhelmed with all kinds of (pulled apart) sequels, reboots and prequels that it is sometimes difficult to keep up with as a passer-by. It's not that bad either, often those kinds of films don't amount to much.

This last part makes it all that much bigger and more epic. The problem is, you're just looking at some kids who absolutely can't fulfill their roles. Lawrence is not a bad actress per se, but what she is doing here is really not good. The rest of the cast participates nicely in this circus.

The Battle Royale structure of the story has long since disappeared, it is now mainly about good versus evil with a twist at the end of which I think the film itself realized that it was actually no longer a twist. Not very subtle anyway.

There is quite a bit of money in this film, here and there a few interesting moments, but it hangs together like loose sand and the seriousness detracts enormously from the experience. In itself it is good that the young adult hype is behind us, although that does not say much now that we are flooded with Marvel and Star Wars fruit all year round.

1.5*

Also, the film has an ending that you may have secretly hoped for. It's nice to finally know how the story ends and to see that there is a happy ending.

Katniss [Jennifer Lawrence] survives the attack on her by the manipulated Peeta [Josh Hutherson] and remains a key pawn in the cat-and-mouse game between President Snow [Donald Sutherhland] and rebel leader Alma Coin [Julianne Moore]. Alma wants Katniss to rest and remain available for propaganda, but Katniss is determined to deal with Snow personally. To do this, she must deceive both her allies and her enemies. The long run-up to the big denouement continues for a while, so you can certainly relax in the first hour. Only in the second half does some of the shine of the first two films in this series return and there is a fine finale, but it would be nice if director Lawrence made a Director's Cut in which he reduces the last two parts of the series to one 140 minute film. Should be doable, I think.
